How it is made
As the studio tells it
Each mug has a cat modelled in clay, on the rim or as the handle, and a scene painted by hand under the glaze. The studio in Jingdezhen says each picture is painted by a craftsperson and then fired above 1,000 °C. It leaves the foot unglazed for grip, and says the depth of the painting differs from mug to mug.
On Ladder Cat, a grey tabby lies along the rim with its paws over the edge, an orange ladder climbs the front, and a painted cat peers out of green grass. On Boxing Cat, a black cat in red boxing gloves clings to the side and is the handle. The rim and walls are uneven, and the foot is left unglazed.
