Painted Patchwork Hand Cup, close up

How it is made

As the studio tells it

The panels are painted by hand under the glaze, the studio states, and it makes the cups in Jingdezhen. It leaves the base unglazed so the cup holds its place on the table. Painting, colour and size differ between cups of the same design, so you get the design you choose, painted its own way.

Each facet is a panel of colour over dark speckled clay, in charcoal, brown and cream, with a cream and rust glaze running down from the rim. The Bunny cup has a bunny in a blue top inside a little arch, with a red mushroom, a smiling cloud, a pink daisy and a red double heart around it. The Tuxedo Cat cup has the cat stretched out on one side and sitting up on the other, among a bow, a tulip, a paw print and a spoon and fork. The Bunny cup and saucer adds a saucer painted in a ring of matching panels, with a carrot among them. The cup you receive follows the design you choose, but its painting will differ from the photos.
